The Ribeira riverfront in Porto: colourful houses, stone arches, and traditional boats on the Douro
Porto, from the river. The essay begins where the photograph is most competent.

Notes

A densely stocked clothing shop, bright lamps, bags on the wall

Shop

When a room decides to shout

Some displays are a census of everything the shop has ever loved. Useful as a warning. The argument is in the essay.

A steep city street lined with tiled buildings

Letter

A street that still climbs

From Lisbon, on a Tuesday when the tiles were doing more work than the shops. A short letter in the next dispatch.

A hand writing in ink on a sheet of paper

Desk

The second cup

The journal is made at a table in Porto. Notes are still written before they are typed. This is a boast and a method.

Three pale ceramic bottles, two of them holding dried seed heads
Issue object · not for sale, already in use.

Object

Three bottles and a dried stem

Bought from a shop that does not ship. The rims are uneven. One of them leaks if you are careless, which has improved our manners. We asked nothing of the set except that it be used, and it has been: water, a single branch, the corner of a desk that was too bare to think beside.

Object studies in Betty Observer are not shopping guides. If a thing cannot survive a month of ordinary handling, it does not earn the page.

Four letters a year. No announcements dressed as news.

Write to the desk with a note, an essay, or an object study. Send the idea in a few paragraphs. We reply, including when the answer is no.
